i want to buy a remote control car or truck for my son who is about to turn 11. It will be just for fun, not competition. i do want it to be a fairly nice one though. I'd be willing to spend around $100 or so, but the ones at walmart or target don't impress me, & the ones I've seen online are way to pricey.

So could someone recommend or point me in the direction of what I'm looking for?

You are in the right direction by not going with Walmart or Radio Shack. However, you might have t increase your spending budget a little. You want to get a good hobby grade RC that way when something breaks, you can actually find replacement parts for it. And no matter how great of an RC car you get...it's going to break. And I suggest getting one from a hobby store or online hobby store, that way you can get the parts you need for it...where you bought it. A VERY GOOD starter RC for your son would be this....http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXZDB3**&P=ML Traxxas is an extremely popular brand and of great quality. This is a very popular model out right now and it comes with waterproof electronics. So if he wants to run it in rain, mud or snow...this can do it. www.towerhobbies.com is a great place to get it. If you look at the page you can see an Easy Pay option. Your CC will be charged 1/3rd of the cost every month (3 months). It's a convienient way to not have to drop $250 at once. And if you look at the home page, there are coupon codes for a few extra $$$'s off, plus free shipping. The Traxxas Slash is about the cheapest of best quality RC you are going to find. If you want to see how it runs, do a search for Traxxas Slash on YouTube. That will give you an idea of what you are buying before you make the purchase. If you are looking for something else but still great quality, keep these RC brand names in mind....Traxxas (my fav), HPI, Associated, Tamiya, Losi, Kyosho. You can find all these brands (except Losi for some reason) on Tower Hobbies web site. It's really overwhelming seeing all that is out there. I have 5 Traxxas vehicles and love the brand and customer support. Hope this helps.

I recommend the Team Associated SC10. It costs around $290 but let me tell you the good news. The SC10 if upgraded properly, can go up to 50 miles per hour. It goes around 30-35 mph stock everything. Don't buy any of those trucks that are cheaper than $200. They are really slow (they go between 2-8 miles per hour), they break really fast and have short range of operation, and to that they have suckish batteries which last 10 minutes MAXIMUM.

The SC10, however, can last a lifetime if maintained properly (cleaning, not crashing, not hitting, etc.). The remote range is really good, and if you want to race with it later on, you can. The best thing is that with these cars, you can regulate SPEED using the remote. you can have it set to full throttle or just cruising speed which is around 5 miles per hour. These cars don't have breakable plexi and even if they do break, you can always get a new body and even get a custom one. I recommend getting the 2 wheel drive (2x2) and getting it brushLESS (no brushes in motor) Go to: http://www.teamassociated.com/cars_and_trucks/SC10/Brushless_RTR/
